Mum"bhai" :- the city of dreams..full of fun and frolic...filled with people who are kind and helpful ..the land of the famous "vada-pav" and "pav-bhaji",the inseperable and amusing lingo its associated with, all make Mumbai the city everyone loves to be in... Its the city with great spirits, the city which personifies the "phoenix" , rising from its ashes, after every blow..after every tryst it has had with destiny. However the flip side to the city...the so called dark side is that along with being the financial capital of the country, its also its "crime capital"....MumBhai as its famously known,is also the place of the "bhais"..from the small time goons to the masterminds of large crimes....from the Ejaz Yedda to the Chotta and Bada Rajans...from the Shakeels to the Menons...from the pappu pager to our very own Munna and Circuit...we have them all.....Thus this not only makes an interesting topic to write about but also the formula responsible of delivering huge hits for our very own "bollywood " industry...
let me then just ask a very simple question...
Don't you think that the film industry, one of which is bollywood, glorifies these gangsters???? giving them a name,a face ....portraying a story, part of which is true and most of which will always be the work of fiction..
Don't you think that gangster movies act as a trampoline for some film-makers and all those actors who have reached the fag end of their dying careers??????
On careful thought, one would surely get an answer..a shockingly pertinent answer...Such movies are surely known to revive Dying careers of both the actors and the film-makers involved, keeping in mind that almost 99% of such movies are a hit.The pioneers in this field are directors like Ram gopal verma, who makes up for all his flop movies by releasing one movie on gangsters and ganglords. the point is that these r the only movies that work for him....remember Shiva,Satya ,Company and more recently Sarkar..

I came across the thought of writing about this topic when i saw the promos of the much talked about release of the week, an Apoorva Lakhiya movie, "Shootout At Lokhandwala"..poof!!! man pages and pages have been written about it..zillions of advt time has been associated with it..with interviews and character descriptions....u see they force( make) u to think bout it...(even wen u don't want to)....
So apart from the "AD" space, wat really caught my eye was the resurrection and the rising of Viveik Oberoi a.k.a Maya Dolas. Till recently, this guy was known for his estranged relationship with a beautiful actress and his infamous press conference accusing a Famous Khan of "harassing" him by giving 40 missed calls( u remember that, don't u????). But now with a power packed performance like the one in the above movie, he's surely gonna be known for his acting skills too..finally..khush beta..!!!!!!
Try to Remember more carefully and you will realise that even his first hit, which was also his debut movie, was also a gangster movie..hmm remember the Chandu bhai from Company ( a ram gopal movie...)....isn't it a food for thought that till nw only gangster movies worked for him...saathiya being the only exception..!!!!!!!!!

The life of crime portrayed as glamorous, dangerous, brutal, and ultimately pointless is something the West have grown accustomed to.Films like "the godfather" and "gangs of new york" reinforced the idea that a crime and gangster movie simultaneously attracts and repels us.Movies like "COMPANY" and "D"( the randeep hooda starrer, the guy who got known only because of two reasons:-
1) the goonda movie he debuted in
2) his linkup with sushmita sen....)
were based on stories told from the perspective of organized crime, a phenomenon that was unseen till the last decade. they glorified the most heinous names of the crime industry, ones responsible for everything, from drugs to extortion ,mafia to prostitution, everything... i guess such glorification was uncalled for,not at the pretext of displaying "true stories"???????
Let me rewind your memory a little further to the days Sanjay Dutt was in deep trouble for his alleged court cases( i kno he still is) and his films weren't happening too..... it was at that this juncture of time that "Vaastav" happened..the story of a young man dragged into the field of crime and killing, walking the lanes of the Parel chawls, extorting builders and eliminating his enemies to create a strong hold of the underworld mafia...even its dialogues became a huge hit, with youths imitating it everywhere. One of its most famous dialogue that became a lingo by itself "Paachas tola hai maa, paachas tola"is my special favourite.....!!!!!!
Sanjay Dutt proudly became our "Bhai next door".With Vaastav being such a great hit with the viewers, i guess it catapulted his career to a completely different domain.
he proudly became our famous "bhai" trying his hand at a spate of other bhai movies too..including "bhai" comedies - the one with AB Sr, Ash and Ajay devgan( dnt remember the movie name). the point here is not to test his credibility as a fine actor which i'm sure he is, but to analyse how important "Bhaigiri" has been to his career. On a lighter note, its not only his violent Bhaigiri that stole our hearts but also the innocent and humorous ones from the Munna-Bhai series.....
yup people..believe it or not..we can have immensely talented film-makers and script writers but when it comes to delivering a sure-shot hit, to rake in more money than you have invested, a Gangster movie is definitely a great option..so till then with a great profit collection all the stars can sing along
" we r the mumBhai.....we r the mumBhai,
we r the stars,
we r the bhai's , we r the bhai's..........."
Wat say Mr. Ganpat ?!?!?
Quote: Neha Dhupia had Once sed "In Bollywood, only sex and Shahrukh sell"....
Guess she forgot to mention the "Bhai movies" in that list.

NIce analysis dude! n ya, seems original too unlike mine ;)
@ mask:- thnx dude...nd newaz originality is just a perception...smthin original for u can be fake for smone else and vice-versa..rock on man....
Good analysis. Although I wouldn't say gangster movies are a sure-shot formula to success. There have been many duds too!
I believe it is the mystery of the underworld that sparks interest in these movies!
Btw, the sanjay dutt starrer - one more dud - was called "Hum Kisi se kum nahin"
@adi- thnx dude for the name..knew u wud b one person who wud surely kno these names..remember antakshari "runner up team"..dude...i agree with ya..it does not work always..coz if the story itself is a dud ..the movie is surely gona b 1..bt the point is with a gr8 story..i mean one that catches ur attention..it'll surely work...even rumpurs contribute to its success..gangster wrked only coz mahesh bhatt announced its based on life of abu salem wich ws completely untrue...many angles to luk at this perhaps...
hey, nice way to put up the subjetc..
Mum'Bahi'..lovely name ..
Take care
By not being a movie buff, I am not qualified to post a comment. nonetheless, having caught more than a glimpse of quite a few of the movies mentioned here, I can say that its the appetite of the masses that churns out hits. People are intrigued to know what lies beneath the glamour of the cuty. People would love to know how that seemingly innocuous "boy-next-door" metamorphoses into that infant terrible. Yeah, Bhai movies make good business!! And yeah, nice post :)
